Experimental and Analytical Investigation of the Transonic and Supersonic Divergence Characteristics of a Delta-Plan-Form All- Movable Control
The static aeroelastic divergence characteristics of a delta-planform model of the canard control surface of a proposed air-to-ground missile have been studied both analytically and experimentally in the Mach number range from 0.6 to 3.0. The experiments indicated that divergence occurred at a nearly constant value of dynamic pressure at Mach numbers up to 1.2. At higher Mach numbers somewhat higher values of dynamic pressure were required to produce divergence. The analysis and the experiment indicate that the camber stiffness of the control surface and the stiffness of the control actuator are both important in divergence of surfaces of this type
On the central ionizing star of G23.96+0.15 and near-IR spectral classification of O stars
Aims: A near-infrared study of the main ionizing star of the ultracompact HII
region G23.96+0.15 (IRAS 18317-0757) is presented, along with a re-evaluation
of the distance to this source, and a re-assessment of H- and K-band
classification diagnostics for O dwarfs; Methods: We have obtained near-IR
VLT/ISAAC imaging and spectroscopy of G23.96+0.15, plus archival imaging from
UKIRT/UFTI. A spectroscopic analysis was carried out using a non-LTE model
atmosphere code; Results: A quantitative H- and K-band classification scheme
for O dwarfs is provided, from which we establish an O7.5V spectral subtype for
the central star of G23.96+0.15. We estimate an effective temperature of Teff ~
38 kK from a spectral analysis; Conclusions: A spectroscopic distance of 2.5
kpc is obtained for G23.96+0.15, substantially lower than the kinematic
distance of 4.7 kpc, in common with recent studies of other Milky way HII
regions. Such discrepancies would be alleviated if sources are unresolved
binaries or clusters.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures, accepted for Astronomy & Astrophysic
Fast Single-Charge Sensing with an rf Quantum Point Contact
We report high-bandwidth charge sensing measurements using a GaAs quantum
point contact embedded in a radio frequency impedance matching circuit
(rf-QPC). With the rf-QPC biased near pinch-off where it is most sensitive to
charge, we demonstrate a conductance sensitivity of 5x10^(-6) e^(2)/h Hz^(-1/2)
with a bandwidth of 8 MHz. Single-shot readout of a proximal few-electron
double quantum dot is investigated in a mode where the rf-QPC back-action is
rapidly switched.Comment: related papers available at http://marcuslab.harvard.ed
The life and health challenges of young Malaysian couples: results from a stakeholder consensus and engagement study to support non-communicable disease prevention
BACKGROUND: Malaysia faces burgeoning obesity and diabetes epidemics with a 250% and 88% increase respectively between 1996 and 2006. Identifying the health challenges of young adults in Malaysia, who constitute 27.5 % of the population, is critical for NCD prevention. The aim of the study was two-fold: (1) to achieve consensus amongst stakeholders on the most important challenge impacting the health of young adults, and (2) to engage with stakeholders to formulate a NCD prevention framework.METHODS: The Delphi Technique was utilised to achieve group consensus around the most important life and health challenges that young adults face in Malaysia. Subsequently, the results of the consensus component were shared with the stakeholders in an engagement workshop to obtain input on a NCD prevention framework.RESULTS: We found that life stress was a significant concern. It would seem that the apathy towards pursuing or maintaining a healthy lifestyle among young adults may be significantly influenced by the broader distal determinant of life stress. The high cost of living is suggested to be the main push factor for young working adults towards attaining better financial security to improve their livelihood. In turn, this leads to a more stressful lifestyle with less time to focus on healthier lifestyle choices.CONCLUSIONS: The findings highlight a pivotal barrier to healthier lifestyles. By assisting young adults to cope with daily living coupled with realistic opportunities to make healthier dietary choices, be more active, and less sedentary could assist in the development of NCD health promotion strategies<br/
Derivation of reduced two-dimensional fluid models via Dirac's theory of constrained Hamiltonian systems
We present a Hamiltonian derivation of a class of reduced plasma
two-dimensional fluid models, an example being the Charney-Hasegawa-Mima
equation. These models are obtained from the same parent Hamiltonian model,
which consists of the ion momentum equation coupled to the continuity equation,
by imposing dynamical constraints. It is shown that the Poisson bracket
associated with these reduced models is the Dirac bracket obtained from the
Poisson bracket of the parent model
Interlaced Dynamical Decoupling and Coherent Operation of a Singlet-Triplet Qubit
We experimentally demonstrate coherence recovery of singlet-triplet
superpositions by interlacing qubit rotations between Carr-Purcell (CP) echo
sequences. We then compare performance of Hahn, CP, concatenated dynamical
decoupling (CDD) and Uhrig dynamical decoupling (UDD) for singlet recovery. In
the present case, where gate noise and drift combined with spatially varying
hyperfine coupling contribute significantly to dephasing, and pulses have
limited bandwidth, CP and CDD yield comparable results, with T2 ~ 80
microseconds.Comment: related papers at http://marcuslab.harvard.ed
Next-to-leading order Calculation of a Fragmentation Function in a Light-Cone Gauge
The short-distance coefficients for the color-octet ^3S_1 term in the
fragmentation function for a gluon to split into polarized heavy quarkonium
states are re-calculated to order alpha_s^2. The light-cone gauge remarkably
simplifies the calculation by eliminating many Feynman diagrams at the expense
of introducing spurious poles in loop integrals. We do not use any conventional
prescriptions for spurious pole. Instead, we only use gauge invariance with the
aid of Collins-Soper definition of the fragmentation function. Our result
agrees with a previous calculation of Braaten and Lee in the Feynman gauge, but
disagrees with another previous calculation.Comment: 16 pages, 4 figures, version published in Physical Review
Rapid Single-Shot Measurement of a Singlet-Triplet Qubit
We report repeated single-shot measurements of the two-electron spin state in
a GaAs double quantum dot. The readout scheme allows measurement with fidelity
above 90% with a 7 microsecond cycle time. Hyperfine-induced precession between
singlet and triplet states of the two-electron system are directly observed, as
nuclear Overhauser fields are quasi-static on the time scale of the measurement
cycle. Repeated measurements on millisecond to second time scales reveal
evolution of the nuclear environment.Comment: supplemental material at

Quantum Degenerate Systems
Degenerate dynamical systems are characterized by symplectic structures whose
rank is not constant throughout phase space. Their phase spaces are divided
into causally disconnected, nonoverlapping regions such that there are no
classical orbits connecting two different regions. Here the question of whether
this classical disconnectedness survives quantization is addressed. Our
conclusion is that in irreducible degenerate systems --in which the degeneracy
cannot be eliminated by redefining variables in the action--, the
disconnectedness is maintained in the quantum theory: there is no quantum
tunnelling across degeneracy surfaces. This shows that the degeneracy surfaces
are boundaries separating distinct physical systems, not only classically, but
in the quantum realm as well. The relevance of this feature for gravitation and
Chern-Simons theories in higher dimensions cannot be overstated.Comment: 18 pages, no figure
Decomposition of NO studied by infrared emission and CO laser absorption
A diagnostic technique for monitoring the concentration of NO using absorption of CO laser radiation was developed and applied in a study of the decomposition kinetics of NO. Simultaneous measurements of infrared emission by NO at 5.3 microns were also made to validate the laser absorption technique. The data were obtained behind incident shocks in NO-N2O-Ar (or Kr) mixtures, with temperatures in the range 2400-4100 K. Rate constants for dominant reactions were inferred from comparisons with computer simulations of the reactive flow
